‘Did we just have an earthquake?’ Sonic boom sees Lincolnshire residents report homes shaking

Residents feared an ‘earthquake’ was striking parts of Lincolnshire this morning as they reported feeling their houses shake.

Social media in parts of the county came alive just before 9am this morning with locals checking in to see what has caused the noise and after effects, with reports from areas including Bicker, Kirton, Wyberton, Boston and also Spalding.

“Did we have an earthquake just now?” asked one poster, which brought a series of responses from fellow locals.

“I ran outside as thought someone had crashed into the side of my house or something! The floor shook,” one person wrote.

Another agreed: “Shook my whole house was so scary thought it was a crash or something everyone was looking outside there house.”

“Made my whole house shake in Kirton,” one social media poster said.

A Bicker resident wrote: “Thought one of the tractors in the field behind our house had hit a gas main or something and blown up.”

A joker said: “Sorry everyone...I was making love and made the Earth move.”

One Freiston resident explained: “Sounded like someone had fallen over upstairs but I’m home alone.”

“Heard in Wyberton! Thought the wardrobe had fallen over!!!” added another poster.

“Heard it in Kirton Holme. It shook the whole house,” one person wrote.

Meanwhile, in Spalding one witness said they ‘felt wobbly’.

However, it can be revealed that the noise came from an American F-15 plane.

Flight tracker data and maps have revealed the aircraft heading for Peterborough caused a sonic boom.

Sonic booms are a sound associated with shock waves created when an object travels through the air faster than the speed of sound.
