Wyberton pub applies to display large ‘ales and sport’ signage

‘Ales and sport’ sounds like a good pitch to get punters into a pub - and one hostelry is hoping to have that motto displayed in huge letters to attract passers by.

Admiral Taverns have applied for advertisement consent to install illuminated signage both inside and out at at Wyberton’s Pincushion Inn.

The designs submitted to Boston Borough Council’s planners include one sign to measure 2.2x2.2m with the pub’s logo, along with the words ‘ales & sport The Pincushion’ on show on a large road-facing side wall.

“Whilst designing our proposed signage scheme, we were keenly aware of the history of this site and its prominence within the wider street scene,” the heritage statement produced by SR Signs said.

“We are aware it is opposite a Grade-II listed milestone, the works proposed will not impact on this.

“As a result, we opted to design a like-for-like scheme in terms of signage locations, with a lighter redecoration colour to enhance the appearance of the site.

“We have tried to replicate the existing sign sizes where possible as the existing signs are scaled perfectly for the building to accommodate, without them becoming overbearing.”

After being closed for a brief period, the Pincushion re-opened under new management in August last summer.

The statement added: “Where we have positioned the lighting will allow the key architectural features of the building to be highlighted without dominating the street scene.

“Overall, we feel that our proposed scheme is sympathetic and will enhance/protect the building for many years to come.”
