The nun is a Pilgrim! Former Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England Sir Jonathan Van-Tam wears a habit to watch beloved Boston United reach Vanarama national League North play-offs

Did you hear the one about the nun and the knight of the realm?

Lincolnshire’s Sir Jonathan Van-Tam shot into the national psyche during the 2020 Covid pandemic.

In his role as Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England he regularly delivered the Government’s daily briefings, updating the public on the latest news and changes to lockdown rules.

However, on Saturday Sir Jonathan sported a different look to his trademark dark suits as he watched his beloved Boston United reach the National League North play-offs.

To mark the final game of the regular seasons, 300-plus Pilgrims fans travelled to Hereford in carnival mood with many in fancy dress.

Amongst the dinosaurs, Hulk Hogans, Super Mario Bros and lifeguards packed into Edgar Street was Sir Jonathan dressed as a nun.

Sir Jonathan - who regularly snuck United memorabilia onto TV interviews during the pandemic, and convinced Sir Chris Whitty to join him for a match at the Jakemans Community Stadium - saw his prayers answered as a 2-0 victory saw Boston secure sixth spot in the table.

United return to action in their first play-off clash on Tuesday night away at Alfreton. Will Sir Jonathan be back in the habit?
