South Lincolnshire’s Ear Car Lincs clinic rescues weird and wonderful objects from clients ears

Pencil lead and hearing aid parts are among the list of weird and wonderful items which have been rescued from the ears of clients at a health care clinic.

The Ear Care Lincs service in Boston, which serves south Lincolnshire was founded seven years ago and is currently being run by Joe Nicholls – who says he receives high levels of career satisfaction every day after following in his mum Rachel’s footsteps.

The 25 year old ear care technician said: “I first learned about the industry through my mother, who was an ear, nose and throat nurse for 35 years and she set up this site roughly seven years ago.

“My mother noticed that there was an increased demand for quicker access to ear wax removal procedures. Many of my mother’s patients simply weren’t willing to wait for NHS appointments.

“Each week we see between 20 and 40 patients who commonly visit us for ear wax removal sessions and we often see people who are middle aged and elderly, because the ear’s natural cleaning process slows down as you get older – which results in overproduction of ear wax.”

Joe explained that he has come across a range of weird and wonderful items in patients’ ears such as, pencil lead, grommets, the rubber end of a pen lid, hearing aid parts, the back of an earring and cotton buds.

He said: “You shouldn’t use cotton buds as you can end up pushing ear wax further down the ear canal, as the saying goes – you shouldn’t put anything in your ear smaller than your elbow.

“If people do want to clean their ears, give them a wipe with a warm wet flannel – just don’t go pushing anything in.”

The health clinic offers two types of ear wax removal procedures, electronic irrigation and microsuction.

Joe added: “I receive very high levels of career satisfaction daily. It’s honestly the best feeling being to be able to make a positive change to a patient’s physical and mental well being every single day.

“The patient who got the pencil lead stuck in their ear had no idea how it got in there or how long it could have been in there for. It’s always quite surprising for both myself and the patient.

“My advice to someone who has something stuck in their ear would be to relax, avoid removing it themselves to avoid any further damage and seek professional help with a reputable ear care professional.
