A former Bourne resident has been knighted for his services to the UK’s national security.

Sir Mark Sedwill, 53, was honoured at the investiture ceremony on Friday, June 1, at Buckingham Palace.

The current national security advisor received the knighthood from Her Majesty The Queen under the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George.

“It is at present awarded to men and women who hold high office or who render extraordinary or important non-military service in a foreign country, and can also be conferred for important or loyal service in relation to foreign and Commonwealth affairs,” said his brother Phil Sedwill.

Mark was born in London but moved to Bourne when he was four years old and grew up in Northorpe where he attended Thurlby Primary School.

He went on to attend and become head boy of Bourne Grammar School before going to college in St Andrews and Oxford and then later to work for the foreign office.

He served as the Ambassador to Afghanistan from 2009 to 2010 and as the NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan in 2010 before taking up the UK national security adviser position in 2017.

Commenting on his knighthood, Sir Mark said the day at the palace had been “very special”.

“I feel privileged to be honoured in this way for my work in the civil service.”

Sir Mark’s mother June still lives in the house in Northorpe where they grew up.

“As a family we’re incredibly proud of his achievements,” she said.
