Fed up Tongue End resident wants to see ‘dangerous’ section of South Fen Road in Bourne repaired

An angry villager has hit out at the authorities for repairing the ‘posh end’ of a road while leaving ‘dangerous’ potholes and massive crack.

Tongue End resident Martin Maddison, 58, relies on the notorious South Fen Road to get to Bourne in order to do his shopping and see his GP but he says the surfacing is in a ‘disgusting’ state.

Mr Maddison says that there is a large crack in the road – which he fears may break apart – along with a lot of water-filled potholes.

He feels that fast-travelling lorries are part of the problem and is calling for a speed limit to be introduced to Tongue End – and officials say this is going to happen soon.

Mr Maddison said: “The crack in the road is wide and is going to collapse.

“All of the potholes have got water in them. If you don’t know the area, you would rip the sump off your car if you hit them.

“They are finishing the work at the other end. How they can do the Bourne end where the posh factories are and where they are building houses and not do the dangerous end? They should have done the dangerous end first.

“Bourne get their potholes done.”

Mr Maddison says that lorries are ‘flat out’ down the road and are contributing to the problem.

He has reported the problems with the road to the authorities but says his concerns have fallen on deaf ears.

Mr Maddison said: “I went to see the police at Bourne but it was shut. I rang Lincolnshire Police and told them about the crack and how dangerous it is. They said they can’t do anything.

“I understand that they (councils) are running out of money but they are going to risk people’s lives.

“This is our main road to get to the shops

“They need to get it sorted before someone is killed down there but it falls on deaf ears.”

He is also calling for a speed limit to be put through Tongue End after issues in Baston had been highlighted.

Mr Maddison said: “We cant even get a speed limit through the village. Lorries are doing 50mph through here.”

A spokesman for Lincolnshire County Council’s highways said: "South Fen Road is a route that we have been gradually improving along it's full length with a series of various work schemes.

"The work completed recently at the Bourne end will be followed with further schemes through the next two years which will target the worst areas.

"As for the speed limit issue, we do have a new 40mph limit going in and this will happen over the next few months."
