Bourne Town beat Belper United in the United Counties League

Back-to-back wins have helped get Bourne Town's United Counties League campaign back on track.

The Wakes put aside the disappointment of the previous weekend's FA Vase exit with a two-goal home success over Ashby Ivanhoe last Tuesday night in the Premier Division North.

And they followed that up on Saturday with a 1-0 away success at seventh-placed Belper United to maintain their second spot in the league standings.

Boss Michael Goode said: "It's been a much better week for us with two wins and two clean sheets.

"I said to the lads before the game on Saturday that they've got to trust the process.

"I don't think we've destroyed any team this season but we work so hard for each other.

"We graft and graft to grind out the wins. It's what we've been about for quite a lot of the season and it was good to get back that way on Saturday.

"We were resolute defensively and have got back in the habit of keeping clean sheets.

"It was a good away performance because Belper are a decent side.

"They're very solid all over the park and, if you give them time to play, they've got a threat."

Bourne were still missing injured top scorer Zac Allen while striker Tom Siddons was an unused substitute as his knocks start to heal.

The Wakes faced a strong head wind in the first half but kept Belper at bay while Zak Munton went close on a couple of occasions to breaking the deadlock in a goalless opening period.

Bourne had the elements in their favour after the break and Henry Dunn saw a header blocked on the line while Munton was off target with a header from a superb Dunn delivery.

The vital goal arrived in the 65th minute when a free-kick was played into the box for Will Bird to lay the ball off for Dunn to drive home the match-winning goal.

Dunn had another effort disallowed for offside in injury-time while some late Belper pressure was dealt with by goalkeeper Dan Swan and his defence.

Goode added: "We've just got to keep looking after ourselves and that's got to be the way forward now.

"If we had dropped anything last Tuesday or at the weekend then our tails might have been right between our legs wondering where the three points were going to come from but we've arrested that.

"We look much more solid as a defensive unit and everyone has stepped up."

Jack Wilson has started the last two games for the Wakes and Goode was full of praise for the performances of the former Blackstones player.

He said: "Jack has done really well and he's been so important for us all season.

"He never lets us down whether he starts the game or comes off the bench and has given us a little spark in the last couple of games.

"Henry Dunn has also raised his game recently and the two centre-halves and Dan Swan in goal have been really good while Zak Munton has looked lively."

Bourne face another tough trip on Saturday as they visit fifth-placed AFC Mansfield.
