Bourne Town Reserves have made a good start to the new Peterborough League season
Bourne Town Reserves have defied a challenging run of games to make a solid start to the new Peterborough League campaign.
The Wakes' second string have played five games in 15 days but have recorded four wins and a draw following their promotion to Division Two.
Their latest success on Saturday came in a 1-0 away win at Hampton United Reserves in a match that was played at Peterborough United's training ground
On an immaculate 4G playing surface, the Wakes started the game strongly by having good possession in the early stages.
The one and only goal of the game followed a good passing move.
Matthew Bills played into Ryan Baxter who found Nathan Bills and his smart flick set up Mike Hasler who exquisitely finished to the Hampton goalkeeper's left.
At the other end, a mix up in the middle of the park resulted in a breach of the Bourne defence but Ben Asplin in the Wakes goal made a superb save to prevent a Hampton equaliser.
Another effort from Hampton on the edge of the box went over the bar while the Wakes were close to a two goal advantage with Baxter's effort coming off the bar.
Both teams had further half chances but lacked composure and that clinical edge in the final third.
The opening part of the second half was like the first in a very scrappy affair with neither team getting a foothold on the game.
The introduction of James Ferrow and Liam Bedford in the forward line provided a different challenge to the Hampton defence.
Ferrow’s direct running at the Hampton backline and Bedford's technical ability were a handful in both creating good openings but lacking a lethal finish.
Disappointingly the Wakes had a player sin binned in the last quarter but Hampton were not able to breach the Bourne backline with Asplin, Cameron and Ward dominant and the rest of the team producing a solid block in front of goal.
Bourne travel to Tydd Reserves on Saturday.
Wakes: Ben Asplin, Sam Webster, Dan Henson, Tom Cameron, Tom Ward, Matthew Bills, Matt Dodson, Nathan Pearson, Ryan Baxter, Nathan Bills, Mike Hasler. Subs: Scott Hardwick, Tom Middleton, Callum Beveridge, James Ferrow, Liam Bedford.
