Bourne Town A win Division Three of the Peterborough League

Bourne Town are celebrating a second title triumph after their A team were crowned Peterborough League Division Three champions on Saturday.

While the Wakes were receiving their United Counties League Division One medals at the Abbey Lawn on Saturday, Steve Bills' side defeated second-placed YDP 4-1 at Elsea Park to clinch the league title.

With Bourne only needing one point to secure the championship and YDP having won the three previous encounters between the two sides, the Wakes were well up for the game.

They started brightly by dominating proceedings and a fantastic defence-splitting pass by Liam Gibson found Dan Rayner whose effort hit the post.

Two further chances fell to Rayner, with the goalkeeper saving well, pushing the second over the bar.

The pressure soon paid dividends as Jake Dilley found Alfie Woodward in the middle of the park, the latter then produced a sublime pass to Ryan Baxter who finished superbly.

At this time the Bourne lads were well on top. The back four of Dilley, Tom Ward, Gibson and Sam Moore were totally dominate.

The YDP wide players were identified as potential threats but Dilley and Moore had outstanding games by not giving them a sniff.

And it was Dilley who started the move for an excellent team goal which saw Bourne double their lead.

He fed Baxter in the inside left position who found Rayner in the middle and his ball on the right side of YDP's goal was finished superbly by Callum Beveridge.

Beveridge went close on a second occasion but a superb cross by Mike Hasler just eluded his outstretched leg.

The half-time discussion was mainly focused on game management, looking after the ball and making it tough for YDP to get back in the game.

The young Wakes side did not disappoint, following the instructions to the book.

From an excellent press, Rayner closed down the YDP keeper, dispossessed him and sent the ball goalbound for a 3-0 lead.

The strength in depth of the squad this season has been a big factor for success.

Substitutes Nathan Bills, Matt Dodson, James Ferrow, Darren Halliday and Scott Hardwick all entered the field of play and had a positive impact.

Nathan Bills received a ball down the left, cut inside the box and coolly went round the advancing keeper to score his team's fourth goal.

During the final part of the match, Ben Asplin’s goal faced the most pressure it had all game and, direct from a free kick, Elvis Munyiri scored YDP's only goal of the contest.

Manager Steve Bills commented: "What a day for the team and club - the A team securing the league title on the same day the first team received their league winning trophy.

"The whole squad has been fantastic with their commitment and hard work not only this season but last as well. It's two back-to-back promotions so Division Two here we come.

"If this young side stays together with the same commitment then the sky is the limit."

Bourne still have two league games remaining and travel to Netherton United A on Saturday.
