Reaction from manager Michael Goode after Bourne Town win the United Counties League Premier Division North play-off final

Manager Michael Goode admitted he had been through every emotion possible after watching his Bourne Town side continue to 'work miracles' after securing promotion on Saturday.

The Wakes were 8-7 winners in a penalty shoot-out over Boston Town in their United Counties League Premier Division North clash at Boston Town.

The match had finished at 1-1 after 90 minutes as Brad Marshall's equaliser cancelled out Jordan Nuttell's opener for the Poachers who had to overcome a strong spell of pressure from Bourne at the start of both halves.

Goode said: "We carried on from last week in the opening 15 minutes and started really well but Boston are a good side and they've got a lot of experienced players at this level. They are compact and have that outlet ball.

"We weren't fluid and gave the ball away too much as the first half went on which has cost us with their goal because we were trying to get one before half-time.

"I told the lads to start the second half fast to carry the momentum on and we would get a chance.

"It could easily have been 1-1 before we equalised and then we could have relaxed and settled down but, as the game goes on, you are always worrying and you do wonder if it was going to be our day.

"Our set pieces are always good though and Marshy has got a big foot on it.

"Overall, I felt we had the better chances in an even game but I have been through every emotion possible.

"We had to rely on our experiences of this season when it came to penalties and that really mattered in front of a big crowd because our penalty taking was brilliant."

The victory completed back-to-back promotions for the Wakes after winning the United Counties League Division One title last season.

Goode added: "We have worked some miracles this season to come up and win promotion by only adding a couple of players.

"Credit to the management team because we have done a decent job and made the right decisions at the right time.

"We have brought in the right players and the right people and they've thoroughly deserved it which is just brilliant for the club."

A massive crowd of 1,781 watched the Wakes create club history with Goode full of praise for the support and the work from Bourne officials, especially chairman Chris Good, behind the scenes.

The Wakes boss said: "It was a great day and it was brilliant that the people of Bourne really turned out.

"Bourne is a town that has always supported everything within it and they've got their rewards and I was also particularly pleased for the chairman.

"Chris has put so much time in. He does it for absolutely nothing but never says no and he will back me with what I say.

"He's got the new stands put up, renovated the changing rooms and spent so much time, along with the rest of the committee, getting the grants to make it happen."

Bourne will now be playing football at step four of the non-league pyramid for the first time in their club history.

They are likely to be placed in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division for next season with Goode ready for the next challenge.

He commented: "We'll do exactly what we did after winning promotion last season.

"We'll make sure that we enjoy what we've achieved for a few weeks and then speak to the people in the team to see who is ready and prepared to do the next bit.

"We'll recruit the right people and we'll be ready to go again and see what happens."

It will be Goode's first managerial taste of step four football having started out 15 years ago as manager of Blackstones before a successful spell at Deeping Rangers.

He said: "I never intended to walk back into the game after I left Deeping.

"I tried at Deeping for four years and we got really close but there weren't any play-offs then because I think the team which we had would have also done us proud as well.

"I came to watch Bourne three years ago with my dad and there were 80 people here and the team was fifth from bottom of the league so it's been some turnaround.

"We've got the play-offs now and this is brilliant. It's so good for the town and the people who come to support us."
