‘A fair deal for our community!’ Lib Dem Greater Lincolnshire mayoral candidate announced

A new Greater Lincolnshire mayoral candidate has thrown their hat into the ring.

West Lindsey District Council leader Trevor Young has been selected to run for the Liberal Democrats.

He says his priorities will be tackling the cost of living crisis, getting rural communities and farmers a fairer deal, and bringing more investment to the county.

Coun Young - who becomes the sixth person to join the race for Lincolnshire’s highest office next month - has represented the Gainsborough South West ward since 1995, and has worked at senior levels in the NHS.

He became West Lindsey District Council leader in May 2023, with much of his term dominated by a fight over the former RAF Scampton’s future.

Greater Lincolnshire will go to the polls on May 1, with the winning candidate securing greater powers for the region from the Government and an annual budget of £24m.

Coun Young claimed that both Labour and Conservative governments have let Lincolnshire down.

“This election is different. We need a Mayor with the experience and energy to use the role for good, not political grandstanding,” he said.

“For years the Conservatives have taken our area for granted and are out of the race this time. Their terrible record running the country is still remembered by residents right across the county.

“At this moment, this new Labour Government just isn’t listening to the concerns of residents right across Lincolnshire. Only the Lib Dems are standing up for our communities.

“The Liberal Democrats have a plan to get our local economy moving and will fight for our fair share of funding to tackle flooding, crumbling roads and failing transport systems.

“The Liberal Democrats are the best choice to win this election, we’ll get a fair deal for our community and we’ll send this Labour government a message that can’t be ignored.”

The other candidates who have declared so far are Sally Horscroft (Green), Andrea Jenkyns (Reform UK), Marianne Overton (Independent), Jason Stockwood (Labour) and Rob Waltham (Conservative).
