Falling tree narrowly misses vehicles at Lincolnshire police station as Storm Lilian buffets country

Police officers had a “close call” after a falling tree nearly hit vehicles at their station this morning (Friday).

Lincolnshire Police Drones posted a photo of the tree at Gainsborough Police Station and reported that officers were responding to multiple calls about fallen trees.

“A close call at one of our stations this morning, just missing cars. Stay safe,” they said.

This comes as Storm Lilian sweeps across parts of the UK ahead of a busy August bank holiday on the roads.

A Lincolnshire Police spokesman added: “We have had several reports of trees down as a result of the wind caused by Storm Lilian, but thankfully no reports of injuries. If you have to travel, consider postponing your journey until the weather warnings are lifted. If you do have to head out, please take care.”

Winds of up to 80mph are forecast in northern England and Wales on Friday, with likely travel disruption, flooding, power cuts, and dangerous coastal conditions.

Warnings for floods and winds are in place across England, Scotland, and Wales.

Meanwhile, travel disruption, including train travel, has been reported. Events such as the Leeds Festival have already been affected.

Lilian is the twelfth named storm of the season, the furthest through the list the Met Office has got since it was introduced in 2015.

Drivers should avoid exposed coasts and routes with a high risk of fallen branches and trees.

Lower speeds and longer stopping distances are necessary; motorists should grip their steering wheels firmly and be cautious around high-sided vehicles.
