Firefighters and other agencies were put to the test when they took part in a mock emergency exercise at a recycling plant.

Mid UK Recycling gave a tour of its recycling facility at Caythorpe last week before staff from a range of agencies took part in a training exercise at Brant Broughton Fire Station. These included Lincolnshire County Council, the Environment Agency, Lincolnshire Police, East Midlands Ambulance Service, local authorities, parish councils, the Environment Agency and public health agencies.

Chris Mountain, managing director of Mid UK Recycling, said: “The event went very well and allowed agencies and firefighters to see our site operating and recognise some of the potential risks that we face. We then moved to the Brant Broughton fire station to work through the scenario of a fire breaking out at the site and what procedures would need to be in place to ensure it was dealt with as safely and efficiently as possible.”

The agencies also took part in an evening exercise at Mid UK Recycling’s Ancaster site. This involved four fire pumps and included training on site, plus a desktop exercise covering a fire scenario at the Ancaster site.

Mr Mountain said: “Fires on waste and recycling sites have been in the press a lot over the past few years and we ourselves have experienced them in the past. We, therefore, feel exercises such as this play a crucial role in ensuring the best procedures and practices are in place should anything occur in the future.”
