Ancaster Primary is in the top five percent of country’s schools for phonics
Ancaster Primary School has been praised by the Government after it came in the top five percent of schools in the country for its teaching of phonics.
Nick Gibb, Minister for State Schools, wrote to the school to send his ‘warmest congratulations’ following the 2015 phonics screening check of Year 1.
Ancaster school headteacher Sam Eden said: “We are incredibly proud to be recognised once again in this area, as we firmly believe in the need for our children to be confident and fluent readers and understand how this can then be utilised to impact on pupil outcomes across the curriculum and throughout their life.”
Mr Gibb said that 99 per cent of those pupils who achieve the expected standard in the check go on to achieve at least the expected standard in Key Stage 1 reading.
He said: “We want to ensure that every child develops a firm grasp of phonics which is why I was so delighted to see your results. With at least 95 per cent of pupils at Ancaster C of E School reaching or exceeding the pass mark in the check, your school is in the top five per cent of primary schools in the country.”
He added: “I am pleased to learn that you have ensured that your Year 1 children have a firm foundation in reading, from which they can develop further and become increasingly fluent readers.”
In November the school received an ‘outstanding’ grade in a church schools’ inspection report.
