'Birthday boy' asked for donations for Grantham Passage

A man who asked for donations to Grantham Passage instead of birthday gifts has made a donation to the homeless charity of £800.

Family and friends were pleased to support the good cause during a birthday event for Sunil Silva, by making donations and bidding on items up for auction.

A total of £800 was raised on the night, held with the aid of Grantham Freemasons, of which Sunil is a member. A further £210 was pledged afterwards by another guest, Mike Arglye, to take the total over £1,000.

Grantham Passage chairman Andy Maddison said: "The donation that we have received is incredibly generous and it is very gratefully received.

"Sunil kindly requested that all the guests donate to the Passage instead of bringing gifts in the traditional sense.

"I have spoken to Sunil and am hoping that this is the start of a long-term relationship where we can benefit from his experience and expertise in several fields."

Grantham Passage relies entirely on donations to continue its work with the homeless and disadvantaged.
