Grantham cancer survivor runs first ever half marathon in aid of St Barnabas Hospice

A Grantham woman ran her first ever half marathon for a hospice that provided her with support through “difficult” times.

Annette Doran, who lives in Sunningdale, took on the Great North Run on Sunday in aid of St Barnabas Hospice and has raised almost £1,000.

The hospice helped Annette after she was told she was in remission from non-Hodgkin lymphoma a few years ago.

Annette had never ran a half marathon before, but had taken part in the Lincoln 10k last year, and completed the GNR in two hours and 21 minutes.

“It was a wonderful day,” said Annette. “The support from up north, as always, was incredible.

“I’ve trained the distances, but a half marathon isn’t something I’d done before, so that was my first time. It was phenomenal.”

Annette said that the heat was “intense” on Sunday, as she waited to start the run.

She continued: “It was intense and that wasn’t easy, but you could run through their showers and use their water stations.

Some of the spectators had hosepipes, which was lovely, and they had Haribos, biscuits and oranges, all being handed out to help you.”

Annette said that she finished around 22,100th out of the 60,000 participants.

She has so far raised £880 through Justgiving, with a further £50 donation from Grantham Lions set to be added to the total.

Annette now hopes to raise a total of £1,000, so anyone who would like to donate can do so at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/annette-doran1.

Annette works at HSBC, who will match up to £500 of her fundraising total as well.
