Richard House Care Home in Grantham welcomed Royal British Legion members and standard bearers ahead of Remembrance Day




A Grantham care home was visited by members of the Royal British Legion ahead of Remembrance Day.

Richard House Care Home in Gorse Road welcomed Royal British Legion members and standard bearers on Thursday morning.

They spent time reminiscing with residents of time gone by and their stories of the war.

Hazel, a resident, said that she remembered "the sound of the sirens the noise of the bombs dropping, then the noise of the feet running to the air raid shelters".

Marlene, another resident, said that her father was a miner and played “a big part in the war” as a home guard, adding that “their jobs where very important as bomb disposal and fire watch ".

Anita Asken, lifestyle manager at Richard House, said: “Listening to the residents talking to the Royal British Legion and having their life story of what happened is so humbling.

“What they want through so that we have got what we today is a miracle.

“I will stand proud as a veteran myself and wear my poppy with pride as will many others.

“As we watch The Remembrance Service with the rest of the world Richard House will be remembering a lone soldier out there doing his duties to protect, so stand proud wear your poppy with pride and honour the service men and women, past and present.”
