Centre planned at school responds to ‘significant rise’ in Grantham’s multi-lingual population

A Grantham academy has proposed to build a ‘European Centre’, car park and pedestrian access.

The West Grantham Academy St Hugh’s has submitted the plans to South Kesteven District Council, stating: “The academy has seen a significant rise in the multi-lingual population within Grantham and the surrounding area, and has seen a high demand for the mature population wanting to learn.”

The planned building project is for an extension with two teaching rooms, a resource area, language suite and toilets. “This will provide an ample area and resources for teaching a large percentage of the required population, while being independent to the academy,” states the application sent to SKDC.

The language teaching will be mainly led by supply or agency staff, along with a small number of teachers currently employed at the school .

If approved, the development will also see the creation of a new student entrance from Ambergate Walk, an improved bin store, and a car park with a greater number of drop-off spaces, aimed at reducing congestion on residential street The Grove.

“The current car park layout provides enough parking for staff and visitors, but provides limited drop-off capabilities, resulting in cars parking on The Grove to drop off their children,” explains the applicant.

“As part of the design it is proposed to construct a new car park with the same amount of car parking spaces as the one to be removed, but providing a significant number of drop-off spaces.”
