Children at Harrowby Infant School have been taking part in swashbuckling adventures this term, to learn all about being a ‘pirate’.

The foundation stage children have been busy making their own treasure maps on tea-stained paper, writing messages in a bottle and jumping abord the pirate ship in the role play area - helping to extend their imaginative play and speaking and listening skills.

A special ‘Pirate Day’ was also held at the school, to celebrate finishing the topic. The children and staff went to school dressed as pirates and took part in a treasure hunt, along with playing pirate games, singing pirate songs and eating pirate cakes - which they had decorated themselves.

Sharon Leeson, deputy headteacher, said: “The children have thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the learning experience and outcomes have been incredible.”

Over the next two weeks the school will take on a new project and this time will be the home for 10 eggs, which the children will watch hatch into chicks.

Sharon added: “At Harrowby our philosophy is that learning should be fun and should be through first-hand experience.”
