Closure signs up but Grantham Poundworld may survive
Grantham’s Poundworld may have its ‘closing down sale’ signs up but its fate is not yet certain.
The branch at the Sankt Augustin Retail Park has been caught up in the nationwide adminstration of the overall business, which has more than 300 stores and over 5,000 staff.
A source close to Poundworld told the Journal that closure sales have gone up at stores nationally in a bid to reduce stock. The company is seeking a buyer and the signs do not necessarily mean the business will close.
However, it is most likely that stores will close, it is just a matter of how many, when and where, she added.
Despite efforts to save some or all of the chain, some 100 staff at its Yorkshire head office have already been made redundant.
The Grantham branch opened at Sankt Augustin in April 2016 in the former Brantano shoe store between Sports Direct and Home Bargains creating 30 jobs.
