A dedicated horticultural site for people with learning disabilities is being created on allotments in Grantham.

‘The Garden Project’ is part of the not-for-profit Tess Community Interest Company’s provision of training opportunities to help those with learning disabilities gain employment, and will also provide a gardening service to the community and donate some produce to the local food bank.

The project has seen the transformation of private allotments off Harrowby Road provided for free by their owners. Tess CIC director, Ingrid Lyon, added: “Local businesses have already given their time, men and machinery freely to help us to achieve where we are at present. To name a few, Lindum Construction initially cleared one allotment for us and spent a good four hours with a JCB clearing all the vegetation.

“Richard Setchfield also provided a JCB and South Kesteven District Council freely gave their time and machinery to clear away green waste.”

Ingrid also thanked volunteers from the local Community and Voluntary Service for their ongoing work to clear weeds and maintain the site’s perimeter. She added: “What we need now is sufficient money to put a security fence around the whole plot!”

To raise funds Tess CIC are holding a May Ball at Grantham College, complete with food, bar and entertainment from Ultra 90s. The black tie event, starting at 7pm on May 15, will include a raffle and an auction.

Any businesses interested in donating prizes or sponsoring a table with their advertising displayed is asked to call Ingrid on 07732 061330 or email ingrid.lyon@tess-cic.org.uk

Tickets are £15 and available from www.eventbrite.co.uk and Grantham’s Asda supermarket.
