South Kesteven District Council condemns Margaret Thatcher statue vandalism

South Kesteven District Council has 'strongly condemned' the vandalism caused to the Margaret Thatcher statue in Grantham.

Police are investigating after the statue, which was installed two weeks ago, was sprayed with paint and had a Communist hammer and sickle painted on the barriers surrounding the plinth.

A spokesperson for the district council said: "South Kesteven District Council is aware of the damage caused to the Baroness Thatcher memorial at St Peter's Green in Grantham and the protective fencing around it, and is working with internal and external partners, including the police, to resolve this.

"SKDC understands the strength of feeling surrounding the memorial but strongly condemns the actions of those who seek to damage any public property, or otherwise break the law.

"It is an unfortunate development and SKDC will fully support Lincolnshire Police in their investigation. SKDC can confirm that the memorial is monitored by the local CCTV system and any evidence from this will be shared with the police.

"The damage is being assessed and work is being planned to restore the memorial to its original condition. SKDC is unable to comment on the progress of the police investigation."
