Meet the couple behind the cycle hire shop at Grantham's Wyndham Park
A husband and wife team have set up their own cycle hire business in Grantham.
Wayne and Sally Priest launched Cliff Edge Cycle Hire inside the new visitor centre at Wyndham Park in March to provide more cycling opportunities for families and cycling enthusiasts.
It was already a thriving business in Fulbeck when the couple moved it to Grantham so they could be more central for local attractions including Belton House, Belvoir Castle, Grantham Canal and the challenging terrain of the Viking and Jubilee Ways.
Budding cyclists have got a variety of bikes to choose from including all city bikes, trailors, tag-alongs, child seats, kids’ bikes and even a tandem bike for couples. They also received a grant through Cycle England for two electric bikes.
Their hire price includes puncture-resistant tyres, helmet, lock and pump, all in a lightweight backpack.
They also like to cater for the small family pet who can travel in style in their own trailer. Customers can hire a bike for either half a day or a day by visiting in store or through an online booking system.
Despite being open for a few months, Wayne says that the majority of hires have been from out of county and not from the local area.
He added: “It is a bit like starting again and letting people know that we are here.
“We went for a soft launch in March just to make sure we were open before summer. The reactions so far have all been great. People have said that it’s a fantastic idea.”
Despite its success so far, the past few years have not been easy for Wayne. The 52-year-old had been a scaffolder for 25 years when he was involved in a serious motorbike crash in 2010 and spent three years out of work.
Cycling became part of his rehabilitation and he ended up taking a bike mechanics course.
Wayne added: “I started my cycle hire and mechanics business from my garage at home and from the back of my car and it slowly built up from there.”
