Dad to petition for new skatepark in Grantham

A dad is aiming to launch a petition to create a new community skatepark in Grantham.

Gary Oliver, of Kenilworth Road, Grantham, is hoping to generate public backing for a new concrete park for the next generation of skaters.

He said: “Skateboarding is now an Olympic sport. I have an 18-month-old and it would be great to have somewhere nearby that I could go to teach him how to skateboard.

“I think it would also be another avenue for promoting a healthy community life in Grantham.

“It would be a place where all ages can partake and socialise in sports they enjoy, including skateboarding to rollerblading and so on. They can build genuine skills and talents and have a safe place to practice them.”

Grantham’s previous GZone skatepark was removed from Wyndham Park in 2015 after it deteriorated and became too dangerous to use.

The popular skatepark had been built in 2004 and was described by the park ranger as “the most used piece of equipment in Wyndham Park”.

But damaged ramps and structural issues, as well as rows between users on BMX bikes and those on scooters, led to its closure five years ago.

Gary, 32, added: “I do understand the negativity that can come with a project like this, as well as the history regarding Grantham’s previous skatepark. I appreciate that this is just the start and could be a long road.”

Gary revealed his plans on social media and received lots of positive feedback .

Tupney Cootes said: “I have a seven-year-old that loves to go to skate parks on his scooter. I would be in favour massively for this. We normally travel to Newark to take our son so it would be amazing to have one in town.”
