Driver has lucky escape after wall collapses on her car in Grantham street
A driver has had a lucky escape after a wall collapsed on her car this afternoon (Tuesday).
The woman was driving her Toyota car on Swinegate in Grantham towards the junction with Brook Street when the wall collapsed.
A pile of brick, wood and glass could be seen across the pavement and part of the road, which remains open following the collapse at about 12.20pm today (Tuesday).
The area behind the wall is an empty area of land where South Kesteven District Council has plans to build sheltered housing alongside its Watergate car park.
Sarah Tatchell’s car was damaged down its left-hand side.
Mrs Tatchell said: “It sort of flew straight down on my car. I’m not hurt, I am just in shock because I didn’t see it. There was just a big thud so I didn’t know had happened to me. I am very shocked. I was on my way home, but my husband is on his way.”
Mrs Tatchell added: “I have only just got the car. It’s only a year old.”
The car’s doors and at least one tyre were damaged.
A witness who gave his name as Billy, said he was walking on the other side of the road when the wall collapsed. He said: “I was on the corner near the King’s School. I was just crossing when I heard a loud thud. I caught it in the corner of my eye. It hit the back of the woman’s car. She look startled but was ok.”
A spokesperson for South Kesteven District Council said: “The wall came down due to strong winds. It fell into the road and made contact with a passing vehicle. Contractors are on the site which is being cleared and made safe.”
Police also attended the scene. A spokesperson for Lincolnshire Police said: “We received a report that a wall had collapsed in Swinesgate onto a car. The road was not blocked. Officers attended and one woman was taken to hospital by a family member with what are believed to be minor injuries. The local authority and Lindum Group will be in charge of the clean-up.”
