Grantham drumming sensation passes degree-level music qualification with distinction
A Grantham drumming sensation who is still at primary school has achieved a degree-level music qualification.
Since passing his Grade 8 last year aged 10, Sam Bickmore, now 11, has achieved a distinction in his Trinity College London Diploma.
Sam has been playing the drums since he was six years old and has an ever-growing presence on Youtube and social media.
A recent video of Sam drumming Master of Puppets by Metallica on Facebook has had 2.5 million views.
He has met and played with many musicians and last month was invited for a drumming masterclass with Jason Bowld, drummer for the metal band ‘Bullet For My Valentine’.
Gary Bickmore, Sam’s dad, said: “We are so very of proud of what Sam has accomplished and we would like to give a shoutout to Peter Coppin of Melody Music rooms Grantham who is Sam’s drum teacher.”
This is a Level 4 qualification and is the equivalent to a first year undergraduate degree.
“Even though he is still at primary school, he can now use the letters ATCL after his name, if he wishes!
“For this he has to plan, prepare and perform a number of complex pieces playing non-stop for over 30 minutes to sheet music accuracy.”
Sam regularly plays live wherever he can and has performed with musicians at many open mic and jam nights.
He has been cast as the role of Freddy in the upcoming County Amateur Operatic Society production of School of Rock.
The musical which is on at Lincoln Theatre Royal between 12-20 May.
Gary said that Sam’s big dream is to one day perform live at a large venue, such as Download festival.
