Ex Grantham College students share their success stories
Graphic design students from Grantham College got a glimpse into their futures at their ‘Cutting Edge’ end of year show last week.
Ex-students attended the exhibition, which was held on the second floor at Grantham Museum last Wednesday, or provided snippets of their work in order to show current students the range of careers available to them and how successful they could be.
The second year students have been studying for a BTEC national diploma in digital design and graphics for the past two years.
Mason Humphrey, 17, of Ermine Street, Ancaster, is looking forward to his future after embarking on the course because he enjoyed it at GCSE level. He said: “I wanted to study it at a higher level. I’m now hoping to get into Sheffield University before pursuing a career in branding.”
Previous student Shelarley Bardill, 22, is studying graphic design and illustation at the University of West London. She travelled back from London especially to be at the show. She said: “I wanted to be here to lend my support as I’ve been in their position before.
“My advice is to study either marketing, branding or illustration alongside graphic design as it will open up lots more doors in the future.”
If they could not make it in person, many previous students provided snippets of their work to be displayed with a short biography.
Dipesh Misytry left college in 2007. After gaining a BA honours in advertising at Buck Chiltern University, he went on to work for Dare advertising agency in London and then for Saatchi Advertising, also in London.
Parents and friends were also invited to the show. Peter and Sally Smith travelled from Boston to support their daughter Harley, 18, who has just finished her first year.
Sally said: “We wanted to be here to support her and see what she has been doing. You never get to find out at home.”
Course leader David Thomas has worked at the college for 18 years and was pleased with how the show went.
He said: “All the students produced work of such a high standard and I wish the second year students good luck at university.
“I would especially like to thank the ex-students for their contribution and support for the event.
“Grantham Museum was a great venue that I hope to use again.”
