Father and sons were victims of vicious mob in Grantham town centre

A father has told how he and his two sons were seriously assaulted in a mob attack in Grantham town centre, which was so serious that he thought one of his sons was going to die.

Peter Brown was with his sons on a Saturday night out when a group of people attacked them and knocked him and one of his sons unconscious.

Last week, four men were jailed for their part in a number of violent acts that took place in the incident on October 27, 2018.

Two more were given suspended jail sentences and another a community order for their part in the violence that night.

Mr Brown, who was almost 60 at the time of the assault, was in the town with his sons Daniel, 21, and Tom, 28.

The vicious attack happened at the Late Lounge, now Edwards, in the Market Place.

Mr Brown told the Journal: “I was sucker punched and I went over like a skittle, hitting the pavement and I was knocked out for 20 minutes.

“This is all on CCTV, the whole incident, and my sons also being attacked. There were 16 people involved and only three of us.”

Mr Brown has criticised the police for not attending the incident straight away.

He says it was 30 minutes before any officers arrived, even though it was a busy Saturday night.

Mr Brown , of Barrowby Road, Grantham, says the incident started in the Late Lounge, where he was assaulted. He says Daniel was being picked on and he intervened and was hit. On leaving the club, he was then hit again with a ‘haymaker’ sideways punch.

Mr Brown added: “During that time one of the defendants assaulted me on my head whilst I’m knocked out on the floor in the street.

“It took 30 minutes for the police to arrive in the Market Place where all the pubs and clubs are on a very busy Saturday night .

“The excuse from the police was they were dealing with an incident at Oscars [bar].

“There is a state-of-the-art police station nearby but there were no police.

“I am happy the thugs have received prison sentences, but also unhappy as my son was unconcious and I thought he was going to die. I put my coat over him to keep him warm after I had come round from my beating.

“The police took my coat for evidence and it was tied up in a black bag and left for months. I repeatedly asked for it back and when it was given to me it was mouldy and had to be destroyed. I was told by the police to destroy it.

“Daniel received a small award of £650 in total from three of the assailants who did not go to prison. My son Tom received £100, but he was not assaulted. To my dismay no award has been made to me.

“I have been assaulted but not compensated by the court in any way and there are questions to be asked why my sons have and I have not.

“I received cuts to my head, my ribs were in pain for four weeks and if I coughed or sneezed I was in excruciating pain. My ankle was sprained so badly.”

Mr Brown, a self-employed plasterer, said he could not take time off work as he was committed to his customers. He endured the pain for several weeks before going to hospital.

He said the whole incident was caught on CCTV, even showing the attackers going off in a car and coming back with more people who got involved.

Mr Brown said: “I am not happy with the police by far. We have helped them with their enquiries.”

Mr Brown described the attackers as “animals”.

Daniel was taken by ambulance to Lincoln County Hospital. Working as a barber, he discharged himself later that day so he could go to work.

Mr Brown says he is still affected by the events of that night.

He said: “The mental scars will never heal.

“There is always trouble in that square [Market Place]. There is no excuse for the police not being there.

“People need to know exactly what happened. Where were the police? Why were they not there?”

Inspector Gary Stewart, local policing inspector for Grantham, told the Journal: “This was a large-scale investigation where 14 people were arrested and seven people being charged.

“Violence of any kind is unacceptable and this sort of behaviour from anyone will not be tolerated.

“Incidents on this scale are very unusual for Grantham, which is a vibrant and safe place to visit.”

Lincolnshire police and crime commissioner Marc Jones also commented on the incident.

He told the Journal: “I am appalled at the violence suffered by Mr Brown and his family, but satisfied that police action has resulted in prosecutions and custody.

“The deployment of officers is, of course, a matter for the chief constable, but I continue to ensure investment is available for frontline officers and we are recruiting 120 additional officers in the next year – a record number for Lincolnshire Police.

“I will continue to do everything possible to strengthen the force to keep our communities safe.”
