Corby Glen firefighter John raises £1,000 for charity after final gruelling run in full kit
A firefighter has raised more than £1,000 for charity after a series of runs ending with a two and a half mile run wearing full kit, including breathing apparatus, on Saturday.
John Ashby, an on-call firefighter at Corby Glen, was joined for Saturday's run, between Swinstead and Corby Glen, by Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue chief fire office Les Britzman.
John has been raising money for The Fire Fighters Charity by running on his treadmill at home or outdoors in his kit.
He says The Fire Fighters Charity, like all charities, has been hit by the pandemic and the cancellations of numerous fund-raising events.
John told the Journal: "I am super proud of the community. If it wasn’t for them this amount of money would not have been possible. I am grateful to the chief fire officer for coming to run with me and proud of my crew for supporting me.
"I am also proud of myself as not only was this to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity, it was also a way for me to set aside some difficulties I was having in my personal life and focus on something else. I hope I have inspired many others, not just in raising money, but also in a career as a on-call firefighter.
"I have had the support though my career as a on-call firefighter from my wife and children and if it wasn’t for them I would not have made it this far."
