Friendly Bench in get-together to remember murdered MP

Residents in Bottesford joined in a national celebration to honour the life of murdered MP Jo Cox.

Neighbours gathered at The Friendly Bench on Granby Drive, on Saturday, for The Great Get-Together, to enjoy good food, fun and friendship.

Organised by the Jo Cox Foundation, The Great Get-Together, aims at encouraging people to come together with their neighbours. It was held at the weekend to mark what would have been the MP’s 44th birthday.

Jo Cox’s sister, Kim Leadbeater, said:“Jo loved a celebration and, speaking as a proud Yorkshire lass, nobody can rival us for the best parties. Britain is once again coming together to show our country at its best. Whether it’s the big community gatherings or the dozens of smaller events, including boat races, musical extravaganzas and street parties, this will be a weekend to remember.”

The Friendly Bench, was launched in March, by Lyndsey Young, who has lived in Bottesford for 15 years.

It is designed to help overcome loneliness, social isolation and improve the quality of life amongst the elderly, by providing them with an innovative community garden.
