General Election 2019: The new MP for Rutland and Melton is Alicia Kearns

The ballot papers have been counted and the results are in - voters have made Conservative candidate Alicia Kearns the new MP for Rutland and Melton.

She gained a large majority over the other five candidates.

Alicia is originally from Cambridgeshire and has spent her career in national security and defeating terror groups.

The full results are:

Alicia Kearns (Con) - 36,507 votes ELECTED

Andy Thomas (Lab) - 9,583 votes

Marietta King (UKIP) - 917 votes

Alistair McQuillan (Green Party) - 2,875 votes

Dr Carol Weaver (Lib Dem) - 7,970 votes

Anthony Watchorn - 458 votes

In her campaigning over the past month, she has pledged to work fight for fairer funding for rural areas.

"Rural areas have come second best for too long," she said.

"I will end rural disadvantage by increasing the Government funding we receive, so we can invest in adult social care, our environment, broadband and our younger people."

Alicia said her other priorities included a new doctor's surgery for Oakham, to get Brexit done, invest in roads and bus services, stand up for farmers and tackle rural crime.
