Grantham celebrates VE Day during lockdown

People all over Grantham celebrated the 75th anniversary of VE Day on Friday as the town basked in bank holiday sunshine.

Flags were flying and bunting decorated houses and buildings.

People enjoyed sitting out in the weather in their garden, eating and drinking.

My decorations depict the joy and relief of the families of those who returned, and the sorrow of those who fell, many buried in a grave marked only by a cross of scrap wood, no name, no age, only a helmet or weapon to identify their nationality.I was living in Hull on VE Day, just left school at age 14. A two-minute silence took place at 11am followed by parties in gardens throughout town as people observed social distancing.
