Florist Pat Joyce says that so far 2015 has been one of the busiest years for her business, Glen-Esk Flowers Ltd.

Unsurpisingly, the biggest rush was last week in the run up to Valentine’s Day. Red roses remained the flowers of choice, although Pat also noticed that many of the men who came in (and one woman) went for mixed bouquets, or knew that their partner would prefer white and cream blooms.

Glen-Esk was started by her parents in the early 80s, named after their house. Pat says she then ‘fell into it’ and in 1997 brought the florists to Westgate, a central location she is particularly pleased to have had for all these years.

It continues to be a family business, with her 22-year-old son Samuel also working with her.

They create bouquets and flower displays for all occasions, including weddings and funerals, as well as selling a range of gifts.

Pat highlights that unlike bunches available at supermarkets, Glen-Esk’s customers can choose exactly which flowers they want in their bouquets. She has also noticed that weddings seem to be on the rise this year.

Working as she does six days a week, the florist adds that she does not have a great deal of time for much else, but when she can she likes to settle into a good book. Among her favourite authors are chick-lit queen Sophie Kinsella and mystery writer M.C. Beaton.

Pat lives with her husband of 31 years Tony on the Manthorpe Estate, and also enjoys spending time with her three-year-old grandaughter Imogen who lives nearby in Barrowby.

Pat is celebrating her 52nd birthday on Monday with a family meal, and jokes that she does not expect any flowers!

Glen-Esk on 20 Westgate are open Monday to Saturday, and can also be contacted on 01476 578376
