Grantham Rotarian embarks on 300km charity trek

A Grantham rotarian is hoping to raise thousands of pounds for charity by trekking across the Peaks of Europe, in memory of his mother in law, who died from dementia related illnesses this year.

Ken Ackroyd flew to Spain on Monday to take part in the sponsored hike in aid of Dementia and Prostate Cancer.

He took part in his first ever hike along the world famous Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain last year.

However, this year he aims to trek over 300km along the more difficult northern route, which will take him along the Basque country coast line and up into the mountains of the Picos de Europa.

Ken said: “I did it for fun last year but thought it would be great if somebody could benefit from my exertions this year. So I decided to raise sponsorship for a couple of charities which provide support for two of the most high profile health issues that we all have some connection with, namely dementia and prostate cancer.”

Ken set off from Biarritz on Tuesday and hopes to complete the walk by September 12.
