Grantham travel consultant Lynne Page talks the highlights of Spain
Spain is the destination of choice in this month’s column by Grantham-based travel consultant Lynne Page, of The Holiday Village. She writes:
Spain is the second-most visited country in the world and is divided into Costas, each with distinctive characteristics and offerings.
The Costa del Sol, the ‘sun coast’, is on the southern coast surrounded by the Sierra Nevada Mountains, offering a wealth of activities all year round.
The Costa Blanca, the ‘white coast’, is popular all year round with beautiful white sandy beaches.
Both Costas present wonderful villages to explore and plenty of fun-filled resorts beside the Med.
Many of the white beaches that stretch along the Costa hold the renowned Blue Flag award.
They range from white sandy beaches to more rocky ones and city beaches with full amenities.
Spain offers plenty of food choices from seafood to traditional tapas, consisting of tortilla Espanola, gambas al ajillo. Patatas bravas and, of course, paella. The national liquor of Spain is Jerez (sherry).
The Costas are also rich in cultural charms, from ancient castles to modern art museums.
In the Costa Brava, Vila Vella, Tossa de Mar Old Town is draped around a pine-clad cliff that juts out into the sea. It is the only fortified medieval town left on the Catalan coast.
Cambrils Old Town in Costa Dorada is a charming place to wander round. Pass through a gate in the ancient walls to enter the old town and take in the sights of the 14th century watchtower and church of Santa Maria.
Dating back to the 15th century, Marbella’s Old Town is made of narrow whitewashed streets, old churches and squares along with cool restaurants and boutiques.
And in the Costa Blanca you can wander around the maze of narrow, cobbled streets, and you’ll find the blue domed church of San Jaime, whitewashed houses and tucked away shops and tapas bars that paint a local picture.
You may want to explore the winding streets of the old town to see Mojacar’s rich Moorish heritage and head to the old fortress for panoramic views.
There is so much to experience in Spain.
