How should waste services look in future?

While most politicians will tell you that bin collections are often a hot topic when out canvassing, what happens to our waste next comes up far less.

However, with the question of how we get rid of our rubbish, and plastic in particular, now becoming a major concern at a national level, things look set to change.

Here in Lincolnshire, around 360,000 tonnes of household waste is produced each year - about half a tonne for each resident. And it costs us millions of pounds each year to collect and dispose of it.

So we think it’s time there’s a local conversation about how these services should look in future. To that end, the Lincolnshire Waste Partnership (LWP), made up of Lincolnshire County Council and all seven of the county’s district authorities (including SKDC here in Grantham), has launched a consultation on a draft waste strategy.

Its aim is to find the best way of disposing of our waste in a way that not only minimises the impact on our environment, but also gives taxpayers good value for money.

One of our main aims is to boost our falling recycling rates, and a big issue that we need to tackle is waste going into the wrong bin, with food waste being a particularly
common contaminant.

This is an area that will be explored in the very near
future, when South Kesteven District Council begins food waste collections from almost 4,700 households across the district in a year-long trial, the first of its kind in Lincolnshire.

The trial is being run on behalf of the Lincolnshire Waste Partnership and is funded by Lincolnshire County Council.

Waste from household food waste caddies will be collected on the usual collection day each week for environmentally-friendly processing, whether it’s black bin or recycling week, starting in the week beginning June 4. The selected homes all share the same bin collection round.

The hope is that we will see less contamination within our recycling bins as a result.

Residents can give their views on the draft waste strategy online until Monday, July 2, at

If you would prefer to read a paper copy of the documents, you can view them by visiting the main office of any of the eight LWP councils or at your local library.
