Visit places in Grantham the public rarely has access to during Heritage Open Days

There is the chance for visitors to explore places not often open to the public this September when Heritage Open Days return.

The free family events allow people to visit places of important historical, architectural and cultural significance.

Places around the country will be open at various times between September 8 and 17.

Among those places open to the public in Grantham will be St Wulfram’s Church and its Trigge Library, the hidden cemetery on Manthorpe Road and Grantham House.

Chairman of Grantham Civic Society John Manterfield said: “I would urge everyone to come to our Heritage Open Days in and around Grantham this September.

“These days are opportunities to visit places that are rarely open to the public - our hidden Graveyard on Manthorpe Road or the Masonic Hall in Chambers Street or the grounds of Grantham House in Castlegate are just three such venues, or access parts of buildings not often open.

“You can also visit places again and see how they have changed over the years - St Wulfram's Church, ChristChurch in Finkin Street or St John's Church in Spitalgate will all hold memories - some happy and some sad - for many readers.

“As a local historian and as chairman of Grantham Civic Society, I firmly believe that each of us has a strong 'sense of place'. We can identify with the places around us especially those details whether at the level of individual buildings or details such as doors or windows, or a row of cottages or townhouses, such as we see in Castlegate or Swinegate.

“Sometimes we identify with a whole village. Denton or Harlaxton are two such attractive locations close to Grantham. Street scenes and small details evoke in each of us our reminiscences of childhood or family memories or where our ancestors have worked or worshipped.

“Each September, we are struck by people saying they did not know this particular site existed and had been in or around Grantham for so many years. The Manthorpe Road Burial ground or the Trigge library at St Wulfram's are such amazing places and there are stewards on hand to share their knowledge and enthusiasm.

“So come along to these free events and see for yourself.”

Refreshments will be available in several venues so individuals or larger groups can make a day of it.

The interior of the old King's school in Church Street, where Sir Isaac Newton studied, will sadly not be open this year because of work on the school roof.
