Grantham Dramatic Society hosting heritage walks around the town centre with costumed performers bringing history to life

A dramatic society has organised heritage walks around the town centre with costumed performers that will bring Grantham’s history to life.

Grantham Dramatic Society is marking this year’s Heritage Open Days with free Grantham walks on Sunday that take in some of the highlights of the town’s history.

The walks will begin every half an hour from 2pm to 3.30pm, starting from the Westgate entrance to the George Shopping Centre.

Grantham Dramatic Society will provide costumed characters during the heritage walks.

The 45-minute walk around the town centre will offer a real step back in time with costumed performers bringing colourful characters from Grantham’s past back to life.

Characters portrayed include Grantham’s first suffragette, Kings John and Richard III, Charles Dickens, King George IV’s mistress and, of course, Isaac Newton. Each one has something intriguing to reveal about their lives and the town’s past.

The walk will cover some of the town’s richest history and includes Westgate, the Market Place, the Angel and Royal, Swinegate and Castlegate on its route.

Organisers for GDS, Mark Brown and Nicki McKay, said: “We’re delighted to have been awarded funding enabling us to create these fun and insightful walks and present them for free.

“Developed by our members and based on the real historical figures that feature in Grantham’s story, we’re promising lots of laughs along with some fascinating voices from the past.

“It takes a bit of courage for our performers to stand on the street in full historical dress, so we hope people will come out and support them, and enjoy the stories they have to tell.”

Places on the walk are free, but places should be booked here.

The heritage walks programme is funded by Historic England as part of the Heritage Action Zone funding delivered by South Kesteven District Council.

There will be a further opportunity to meet more characters from Grantham yesteryear on Sunday September 17 from 10am to 3pm at Belton House and Londonthorpe Wood.
