Sir Isaac Newton's birthplace to be venue for exciting Gravity Fields events

Woolsthorpe Manor, the birthplace of Sir Isaac Newton, throws its doors open to festival-goers in September with its own events programme as part of Gravity Fields Festival (September 26-30).

Fascinating physics, thrifty science, voyages with Sir Joseph Banks on HMS Endeavour, celebrity speakers, circus science and a special night out are all on the agenda.

Continuing the apple theme, Cambridge physicist and festival outdoor arts co-curator Dr Harry Cliff makes a pie from scratch using ingredients forged in The Big Bang!

Eminent patrons Professor Valerie Gibson and Professor Rob Iliffe both stage talks, updating the quest for new space phenomena at Geneva’s Hadron Collider and looking at the politics behind scientific voyages such as those of the Endeavour.

An after-hours invitation to a Night at the Manor offers a rare mix of snippets of science with tours of the house, music, stalls, a chance to meet festival speakers and a party atmosphere.

On Saturday, Dr Ken, the master of hilarious circus science - who also has a show at the Guildhall Arts Centre in Grantham - invites young festival-goers to roll up and see the thrills and spills.

Hear about Science and Suffrage in the First World War, tattooing encountered before, during and after HMS Endeavour’s voyage, a fascinating story of Banks’ adventures in Voyaging to Madeira and discover how to find the North Pole.

Join Sunday’s Woolsthorpe Wander to step back in time to the village as Newton knew it, followed by a BBQ and live music at St John the Baptist’s Church in Colsterworth. The church where Newton was baptised is holding an earlier commemorative service.
