Raise a glass to Grantham's Juniper Tap which opens today

Grantham’s first independent gin and whisky lounge opens today (thur) at 14 Market Place.

The family owned venture opens at 5pm after a £50,000 spend in the former Trickling Tap bottle shop.

Renamed the Juniper Tap, the new name reflects a major ingredient of gin, which with whisky forms the focus of the new venture.

Director Luke Adams said: “We have restored the building to what it was, showing the original wood panelling that had been hiding behind plasterboard. It’s all natural.

“It’s the only gin and whisky lounge in Grantham. There are about 140 gins, which will increase as time goes on and about 70 whiskies. But we will sell everything else, including beer, wine, cider and spirits.”

The range starts from your entry level spirits, to some costing hundreds of pounds a bottle.

Luke’s mum, Karen said: “It’s like a normal bar but we have an emphasis on gin and whisky. We will also be doing food in here, small plate foods and sharing platters, canapes. Some of the food is gin or whisky related, such as it has been made with gin or whisky, like all our desserts.”

Karen continued: “We were looking at what worked. Retail is suffering and we have to go with that demand. If you don’t change, you lose it.”

The new venture follows their Tap and Tonic cocktail bar, which opened in November 2015 after a £100,000 spend.

Luke explained: “We have kept our cocktail bar untouched, which is in another building around the back. This bar is in response to consumer demands and trends. We have had lots of people asking for another venue. Consumer demands are changing and we have to adapt to that.”

The Juniper Tap means the end of the former Trickling Tap bottle store, but people will still be able to buy bottles of spirits and take them home.

Karen said: “They can taste it and then buy it if they want to. I want to thank everyone who has supported us and we hope everyone comes to enjoy this too.”

The Juniper Tap will open on Wednesdays and Thursday from 5pm to 11pm, 12pm to 12am Fridays and Saturdays.
