Warnings issues after fires in Grantham and elsewhere
A series of grass and hedge fires in Grantham and other parts of Lincolnshire have led fire chiefs to call for ‘common sense’ as we swelter under high temperatures.
Lincolnshire Fire& Rescue tweeted last night: “We have attended a large number of fires throughout the day and this evening caused by bonfires which have then spread! Please avoid having a bonfire during these hot and dry conditions #CommonSense
“Please help us to prevent grass & field fires. Don't start a fire unless you have sited it away from surrounding vegetation, have adequate supplies of water nearby and are watching it at all times. If you see a fire out of control report it quickly, fires spread fast.
Earlier, two crews from Grantham fire brigade attended a fire involving 20 metres of hedgerow off Newark View Grantham.
The crews used one hose reel, water back pack and beater to extinguish the blaze following their 7.18pm call-out.
Earlier, two crews from Grantham used one hose reel to extinguish a tree and tree house that were on fire on Sheepwash Lane, barrowby.
On Monday evening at 7.30pm, Grantham fire brigade was also called to a combine harvester that was on fire in a field of standing crop on Sewstern lane, Long Bennington. Crews using two hose reels and breathing apparatus to put out the blaze.
