Grantham community group at risk of closure
Re-engage Grantham is at risk of closure after the group co-ordinator decided to stand down.
Run by local volunteers, the group provides monthly afternoon tea parties for people aged 75+ that are experiencing social isolation and loneliness.
Across the United Kingdom, there are 2.2 million people aged 75 and over who live alone and are experiencing loneliness.
The Grantham group provides a lifeline of friendship for nine local older people, but recently its volunteer group co-ordinator has had to stand down.
Without this key individual, the group are now struggling to coordinate the get-togethers.
Re-engage has issued a plea for a new group co-ordinator and some more volunteer hosts who would be happy to welcome the guests into meet-ups. They are also seeking business or community groups who would host a tea party.
Tracy Parr, head of service at Re-engage, said: “The group have a fantastic team of volunteer drivers who collect the guests from their homes and bring them along to the tea parties.
“The drivers have developed fantastic friendships with the guests and provide much needed social contact for them.
“If you are able to help in any way to save the group it would make a massive difference for them.”
