Trial date set at Lincoln Crown Court for man charged with murder in Grantham




A man who was charged with murder following an alleged stabbing at a house in Grantham has today (Tuesday) appeared at Lincoln Crown Court.

Tony McDermott, 38, was found at the property in Eton Street just after 4.20am on Saturday.

Nicholas Ward, 37, of Eton Street, Grantham, has been charged with Mr McDermott's murder and this afternoon appeared before Judge Simon Hirst at Lincoln Crown Court.

The Crown Prosecution Service were represented by John Hallissey and Ward was represented by defence barrister John McNally.

Wearing a grey jumper and grey jogging bottoms, Ward spoke only to confirm his name.

No pleas were entered and Judge Hirst adjourned the case for a plea and trial preparation hearing at Lincoln Crown Court on 8 January.

The case was listed for a provisional trial date at Lincoln Crown Court on April 15 next year. The trial is expected to last up to two weeks.

There was no application for bail and Ward was remanded into custody until his next court appearance.

Judge Hirst told Ward: "You will next be at court on 8 January. On that date you will be expected to enter a plea, guilty or not guilty.

"Your trial, if there is to be one, will be on 15 April."

A Lincolnshire Police spokesperson said Mr McDermott's family was being offered support by specially-trained officers.

"We would ask that their privacy is respected at this time," they added.

Police said Mr McDermott had been found with serious injuries which were believed to be knife wounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Our investigations into the circumstances of his death are ongoing", the force spokesperson added.

"We will remain in the local area for the next few days while forensic investigations and other inquiries by investigators are carried out."
