Man dies in A1 crash involving three lorries
A man has died after the lorry he was travelling in collided with two other HGVs in traffic queuing up following an earlier crash.
Police were called to the A1 at Little Ponton about 3.10pm yesterday afternoon (Monday) where the three heavy goods vehicles had been involved in a collision in the queue of traffic held up by a collision earlier in the day near Colsterworth.
The road was closed in both directions and there was considerable traffic congestion. The road was re-opened about 0230 this morning (Tuesday). Two men in a white DAFF lorry were seriously injured. One was airlifted to the Queen's Medical Centre at Nottingham where he is detained with serious injuries. Another man in the cab of the lorry, believed to be in his late fifties and from the London area was pronounced dead at the scene.
Earlier in the afternoon a coach carrying teenagers and a car collided after the coach crashed into the central reservation. The A1 was closed in both directions causing miles of tailbacks. The driver of the car was airlifted to Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham with serious injuries. Nobody is believed to have been hurt on the coach.
Two other people were taken to Peterborough Hospital for treatment. Anyone who was in the area and saw the collision between the three lorries - a black Volvo artic', a DAFF white and red artic' and a DAFF white lorry is asked to contact the police on 101 and leave details.
