Man directed traffic after lights got stuck on red in Bingham and alleged he got told off by police
A man who claimed that he was just trying to be a good samaritan alleged that he was told off by a police officer after assisting drivers when a traffic signal became stuck on red.
The incident happened in Bingham on Saturday (November 25) along Nottingham Road.
"After keeping the traffic flowing in Nottingham Road for half an hour because the lights were all stuck on red, I got an earful from the Police," said the man on a closed social media group.
The traffic lights were believed to have been in place due to gas works being conducted in the area.
The man said he called the police for assistance and was told sternly by an officer that he should not be directing traffic.
"I was told that I should not be doing it, so next time I won't help or phone the police," added the man.
"I was passing by when the young officer was giving an earful to the guy who helped to keep the traffic moving," said another member of the forum who claimed to have witnessed the incident.
The witness said the man was just waiting for the police to relieve him and take over.
"A simple thank you for your efforts but we'll take over now was all that was needed," added the witness.
The man received thanks from several people for his assistance in getting them through the hazard safely and potentially preventing a serious incident.
However, there were some mixed reactions about what transpired.
"If you did a good job then wonderful, but I imagine the police would rather random people didn't interfere with directing traffic," said another commentator on the forum.
"This would be in case they just cause more problems and further risks to road safety."
Nottinghamshire Police were approached for comment but did not respond before the deadline.
