Grantham runners complete marathons despite coronavirus lockdown

With the London Marathon originally scheduled for Sunday, April 26, two runners in Grantham completed their own versions for charity.

Chris Limmer, of Grantham Running Club, completed four marathons in a time of less than four hours each in four consecutive days, from Thursday to Sunday, which would have seen the London Marathon take place.

Meanwhile, Carole Pigott, who had only started running last year, completed a full marathon across four days of running in the same timeframe as Chris.

Carole, 48, ran the marathon in aid of Guide Dogs, and has so far raised over £1,400 for the charity.

She took up running as part of the ‘Couch to 5K’ initiative and completed her four-day marathon running through Saltersford Grove and Saltersford Road, where neighbours came to the edge of their driveways to clap her up the final hill to the finish line.

Carole’s daughter, Laura, said: “I’ve got to say a massive thank you to everyone up Saltersford Grove and Saltersford Road. It’s so nice that in these current times we can all still support each other.”

Similarly, Chris spent four days running to fill the void left by the rearranged London Marathon, covering over 100 miles as he completed four consecutive marathons, each in a time of less than four hours.

Starting on Thursday, Chris completed his first marathon in the Vale of Belvoir, with a time of 3:23:35.

Starting later in the day on Friday, the second run was extremely exhausting with the sun at its hottest. Chris found the last eight miles very tough but this did not deter him at all, finishing a circuit around the Ropsley area in 3:20:11. Marathon number three was in the direction of Stoke Rochford, where Chris encountered some tough moments with difficult sections on the Viking Way to contend with on now very tired legs, completing his third marathon in 3:24:37.

For the fourth marathon, he made an early start on a two-lap course. Other runners and cyclists gave Chris loads of encouragement when the going got tough and he went on to complete the fourth marathon in 3:23:42.

Chris’s efforts raised over £500 for the Crohns in Childhood Research Association, as his friend’s son, Ben Latter, was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.
