Cleaver Meats stall on Grantham Market run by third-generation butcher

A third-generation butcher who runs a stall on Grantham Market says he loves “having a laugh” and “providing a deal” for customers.

Brothers Jack and Glyn Bradley run Cleaver Meats, based in Derby, after taking over from their dad, Geoff Bradley, 75.

Geoff, whose father was also a butcher, established Cleaver Meats in 1978 and at its peak, the business served 25 markets with its locally-sourced products.

Nowadays, Cleaver Meats stalls can be found on 10 markets each week, including Grantham, where Jack, 33, is in charge.

The Cleaver Meats stall is being showcased as part of a Journal campaign to support Grantham Market.

Jack said that it was “nice” to be a part of the family business, adding that Grantham Market is “one of the first ones that [dad] started on”.

He continued: “I just enjoy the banter, having a laugh with the customers and providing a deal for everyone.

“We do deals all the time, try and put different things on offer depending on the season.”

Jack, a third-generation butcher, cut his first piece of meat aged 12.

He said: “The business has developed as time has gone on. It was mainly markets and shops, which we still have, but more is going towards online, so we do a lot of online business.”

Jack explained that even at the age of 75, his dad still does a couple of days a week for the business.

He added: “He won’t finish. He refuses to.”

When asked about the current state of Grantham Market, Jack said: “As a whole, [Grantham] is one of the best ones we’ve got, but there’s different things the council could do in my opinion, but it’s down to them what they do.

“The market has gottem smaller over the years, but that’s due to the fact that there’s not many market traders anymore.

“Things like this and adverts help. I did suggest a spread every two or three months to try and get people interested in going down. Things like that.”

Cleaver Meats now use biodegradable bags and trays on the market.
