SKDC plans cultural strategy

A ‘cultural strategy’ is to be developed by South Kesteven District Council as part of its social and economic development ambitions.

A major district-wide programme of consultation is planned for the strategy, which will encompass heritage, the arts, sports and the sciences.

SKDC says the proposed cultural strategy will enhance and support economic growth, ensure an entertaining cultural offer, encourage learning and participation and enrich the lives of residents.

The report, prepared for Tuesday’s meeting of Culture and Tourism Overiew and Scrutiny Committee, says the recently appointed Head of Arts at InvestSK, Michael Cross, has toured the district and uncovered a rich variety of activities. Workshops involving councillors have also identified many events and organisations but more must be done to find extra contributors to make the strategy more representative.

After summer planning and preparation, workshop/experience days are proposed from September to December across all 30 wards.

“The events will offer practical sessions and provide promotional information from all service areas. these could include dance and drama workshops, poetry and literature workshops, science workshops, heritage tours, an opportunity to engage in a sporting activity and/or take a fitness test.”

There would also be discussions with “strategic partners, users groups, practitioners and others.”

After evaluation, a draft report is set for January, with publication in February for comments. The final report would be signed off in March and the strategy published and distributed in April.
