Memorial garden at Cree Centre in Grantham reopened after redevelopment

A memorial garden was reopened at a Grantham centre for adults with learning disabilities.

The Cree Centre, a day service run by Grantham and District Mencap Ltd in Aire Road, opened a newly refurbished outdoor space for people to remember loved ones.

The memorial garden was opened on Wednesday May 3, and pays tribute to people who attended the Cree Centre but are no longer with us.

Grantham Mencap trustee Natasha Peters was joined by Cree Centre member Sarah Lawrence to cut the red ribbon which officially opened the garden.

The Cree Centre supports adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities, with both staff and users benefitting from the new space.

The garden was developed by Grantham Mencap’s transport and maintenance team.

Derek MacLachlan, a member of the team, said he was “chuffed” with how the outdoor space had redeveloped.

Natasha said: “I lost my daughter who attended here in January.

“[The garden] needed bringing up to date. Everyone worked so hard to do what they have done. It’s amazing.

“It gives people somewhere to remember their loved ones.

“I’m really pleased that it’s been done. It looks really nice.”

The Grantham Mencap team have also been at work rebuilding the raised bed areas at Fairview Farm, its residential service in Gloucester Road, so that members can grow their own vegetables.

A member of the Grantham Mencap management team said: “Since our gardener who kept our gardens in tip top shape retired approximately four years ago and then covid lockdowns and restrictions, our gardens at both the Cree Centre and Fairview Farm became a little neglected.

“Now we are fully open and restrictions are lifted, it was time to start work on our beautiful gardens.

“What better place to start than our memory garden at the Cree Centre.

“Staff members have all enjoyed the work progress over the last few weeks and we think you will agree they have done a fantastic job.”
