Memory Lane: Back in the early days at Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School
The tradition of having your school photograph taken goes back a long time, as shown by this fabulous picture.
It is courtesy of regular Memory Lane contributor Chris Bennett. He says that it was taken at Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School in the early 1900s.
His mum, Doris Shelbourne, is in the middle row, the 12th girl on the left. Chris adds that his grandad must have paid to make sure Doris got into the school, which opened in 1910.
The land was purchased from the Earl of Harrowby specifically for the purpose of setting up a girls’ school, which was first led by Miss H. Gladys Williams, M.A.
